China Mobile Gains on Speculation of Unicom Restructuring
July 22, 2005
China Mobile announced on Wednesday July 20 that its mobile phone subscriber base grew by 3.27 million in June to 223.8 million. Growth came at the expense of China Unicom, which saw 1.3 million adds in June to total 120.5 million subscribers, the lowest monthly gain in three years for the company. The polar fates of the two operators have been attributed to speculation that China Unicom will be restructured prior to the roll-out of 3G. According to statistics provided by the Chinese Ministry of Information Industry, the total number of mobile phone subscriptions in China stood at 363.2 million at the end of June.
